The area was developed with the influence of the Southern Pacific Railroad, completed between San Francisco and Los Angeles in 1876. In the 1930’s, airplanes were brought to the area for flight tests and later space shuttle landings. The Poppy Festival has become a popular event to world visitors as well as residents. Beginning as an Earth Day Celebration, it has grown to an event with over 55 acres of activities and fun. Celebrate Downtown Lancaster is a summertime street fair and farmers market held several times throughout the summer. Residents come together to celebrate their community through family activities, street musicians and vendors.
